With growers keen to utilise the sunlight to produce healthy, luscious crops they also need to have in place an excellent irrigation and fertigation system to ensure their crops are receiving the right levels of water, moisture and nutrients.
An irrigation (or fertigation) system, which moves water around a growing area (be it land or an out of ground system) delivers water (or nutrients) straight to plants through either drip, micro spray jets or sprinklers.
With the large volumes of water being used during the sunny seasons to keep crops well hydrated there is the risk of calcium carbonate build-up in the pipework of the systems. Caused by hard water, this build-up can lead to low pressure, clogged and faulty sprays and ultimately result in effecting the volume of water or fertiliser being distributed throughout the crop.
Introducing an acid, such as nitric, will acidify the water to lower pH to the required levels. By lowering the pH, calcium carbonate is dissolved, and build-up is prevented. How much and how frequently depends on several factors, such as pH of groundwater, evaporation, and the levels of calcium carbonate in the water. Assessing each of these factors will help a grower apply nitric as they work towards their target pH.
Alongside using nitric acid as a water treatment to lower the pH, this chemical also serves as an excellent source of nitrogen which is excellent for the soil as it contributes to healthy plant growth and fuller crops. So with multiple, valuable uses, it’s no wonder Nitric Acid is in high demand at this time of the year.
