Acetic Acid
Methanecarboxylic Acid, Ethanoic Acid
Acetic acid is an organic compound. It is a colourless liquid that when undiluted is also called glacial acetic acid. Acetic acid is the main component of vinegar alongside of course water. Acetic acid has a distinctive sour taste and pungent smell. Besides its production as household vinegar, one of its largest uses is the production of vinyl acetate monomer. An essential chemical building block used in a wide variety of industrial and consumer products.
Acetic acid is the second simplest carboxylic acid (after formic acid) and is an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical, also used in the production of cellulose acetate for polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, as well as synthetic fibres and fabrics. In households, diluted acetic acid is often used in descaling agents. In the food industry, acetic acid is used under the food additive code E260 as an acidity regulator and as a condiment.
