Peracetic Acid
Peracetic Acid is a clear, colourless organic liquid with a pungent odour. It is a versatile oxidising agent that readily dissolves in water and decomposes into non-toxic by-products.
It is used as a sterilant / antimicrobial agent applied to medical equipment along with use in food and drink processing plants, dairy and cheese processing plants and pasteurisers in breweries and wineries. The reason for using peracetic acid as an antimicrobial agent is for its ability to penetrate through cell membrane to disrupt the enzyme system and destroy microorganisms.
A major commercial use of peracetic acid is in disinfection products where, even at lower concentrations, it is effective in the defence against bacteria, viruses and moulds.
It is also used in cooling towers to prevent the formation of biofilms and control pathogenic bacterial growths such as legionella.
