Sodium Silicate
Water Glass, Silicic Acid, Sodium Salt
Sodium Silicate solution is a slightly hazy, viscous alkaline liquid with a number of synonyms including water glass, liquid glass, silicic acid and soluble glass. This aqueous solution of sodium silicate forms a hard, glasslike material when it dries.
Uses of sodium silicate include:
- In the manufacture of detergents to prevent mineral deposits and to soften water
- In the mixing and manufacture of sealants and adhesives
- Concrete and cement (Reacts with calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate hydrate that fills cracks)
- In ceramic production as a drying agent
- Desiccants and drying agents in a variety of applications
A major use of sodium silicate is in the production of detergents where the chemical is used to prevent mineral deposits by controlling the hardness of water. It is also a widely used component in the mixing and manufacture of sealants and adhesives as well as in the production of cement, concrete and general masonry products. Other use includes sodium silicate solution for the preservation of a number of materials including woods and fabrics.
