Sodium Chlorite
Sodium chlorite is light green/yellow liquid with a distinct chlorine-like odour. It is produced from a reaction of chlorine dioxide in sodium hydroxide and possesses the chemical formula NaClO2.
It has many broad and varied uses including disinfection and water purification, through to being used as a bleaching agent in the textile, paper and pulp industries. It works to control and inhibit microbial contamination in cooling systems and, given its fungicidal properties, is also used in the food industry as a solution to wash fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry.
In the textile industry sodium chlorite is a highly effective bleach and is used on various materials from manmade to natural fibres and yarns as it removes the natural pigment without damaging the structure of the fibres.
