Saltpetre, Nitrate of Potash
Potassium Nitrate is a whiteish/grey crystalline salt with the chemical formula KNO3. Also known as saltpetre or nitrate of potash, this odourless chemical is used widely in a variety of different industries for use in fertilisers, pyrotechnics, propellants, food, energy and manufacturing.
In firework production, potassium nitrate is mixed with charcoal and sulphur to manufacture both rocket and colourful spark varieties and is also often used for small scale rocket propulsion.
In agriculture, potassium nitrate features as a component in many pesticides to control insects, rodents and various other animals which can have a negative impact on crop yield. It is also found in numerous fertiliser products introducing crops to a source of nitrate nutrition and potassium.
Potassium nitrate is also used in the manufacture of numerous household items including toothpaste and is used as a preservative in cured meats in place of sodium nitrate.
